A New Way To Say 'Hooray'

Posted on Apr 1st, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.

Shpongle

McKenna:  Trying to describe them isn't easy. On one level I call them self-transforming machine elves; half machine, half elf. They are also like self-dribbling jeweled basketballs, about half that volume, and they move very quickly and change. And they are, somehow, awaiting. When you burst into this space, there's a cheer! Pink Floyd has a song, "The Gnomes Have Learned a New Way to Say Hooray." Then they come forward and tell you, "Do not give way to amazement. Do not abandon yourself."  You're amazingly astonished.

The God Debate

Posted on Apr 2nd, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.

The Great Divide:   Atheist Sam Harris and evangelist Rick Warren, author of 'The Purpose Driven Life', recently sat down to hash out life's oldest question—Is God real? .  Those already familar with Harris's work,  such as his excellent debate with Reza Aslan (YouTube), probably won't find a lot of new material here, but the exchange offers a glimpse into the thought of Warren (something I know I was lacking), and overall I thought it was a very enjoyable read. -  A 10 page transcript follows.

Going To Extremes

Posted on Apr 11th, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.

I'm afraid that I'm doing it again.. :P    I don't seem to ever do anything half way.  It doesn't matter if I'm starting a diet, a new website, or just looking into the next cool thing, I always dive right in, and most recently that surfaced in my educational life. With my 'geek-sense' raised after researching specs for a new computer, I decided to go one step further and sit for my A+ Certification Exam

The certification points to a more portable skill set than the one I currently have, and I think that might come in handy.  In the back of my mind I fantasize that if I ever take that trip I've been talking about the certification just might help me get there. - The only drawback is that while looking for a few  hours to study each day, I probably won't be able to blog with the regularity that I have in the past.  For those who notice the difference please know that it's only for a while.

Where Are The Fireflies?

Posted on Apr 15th, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.

"It's a childhood memory that many of us posess. Sitting on a front stoop as day turns to dusk, watching and waiting for the flash-flash of fireflies to fill the summer night." – When I turned on my browser today and learned that mobile phones may be wiping out our bees, I couldn't help but think about the fireflies.   If you've been wondering where they are, you may be interested in this.
Let's add them to the list!

Windows Media Player in Firefox

Users of Firefox have often had trouble using sites that stream media in Windows-based formats.   It's something that has driven me nuts on proprietary sites like MSNBC, but also on many blogs.  That's why I was happy to see the launch of a Windows Media Player plug-in for Firefox today.   It comes courtesy of Microsoft's "Open Source Software Lab"  [yep, they really have one - lol] , and you'll find a link to install it after the jump.

First Habitable Planet

"Astronomers have discovered a planet outside our solar system that's so similar to Earth it might sustain life. It's temperature runs between 32 and 104F. It's 14 times closer to its star (a red dwarf) than we are to the Sun, but the star, Gliese 581 (shown above), is smaller and dimmer. The star is 20.5 light years from Earth and located in the Libra constellation." - They're expecting water too.

Interesting Protest

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Demonstrators in the Bay Area and across the nation called for the impeachment of President Bush this weekend.  In Ocean Beach protestors lay down in the sand to spell out in giant letters the word impeach.  The display was one of over 100 in American cities.  Participants said they not only want to send a message to the Bush administration, but to Democrats in Congress as well.
