The Ad Fox Refused

Danny Glover - Rescue the Constitution!

Fox News has refused to air an ad produced by the Center for Constitutional Rights that criticizes the Bush administration for the use of renditions, torture, and other tactics. This is that ad.

Creative Status Messages

Posted on Dec 5th, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.

When I come across a collection of short quotes I usually scan it for possible status or  Twitter messages, and this morning was no exception.   I haven't quite figured out how to twist these into a status yet, but they seemed a bit funny and worth sharing.

  • "There's nothing wrong with you that reincarnation won't cure."
    —Abraham Lincoln
  • “Why do you sit there looking like an envelope without any address on it?”
    —Mark Twain
  • "He loves nature in spite of what it did to him."
    —Forrest Tucker
  • "He can compress the most words into the smallest idea of any one I know."
    —Abraham Lincoln

The Last Winter - (Movie)

Posted on Dec 8th, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.

The Last Winter (2006)

Here's a film that seems worth mentioning on Zaadz.  I saw it for the first time last night, and although the movie is fictional I thought there was enough of a global warming undercurrent in it to make it green.   There was also enough suspense to keep me near the edge of my seat.

From IMDb:  "In the Arctic region of Northern Alaska, an oil company's advance team struggles to establish a drilling base that will forever alter the pristine land. After one team member is found dead, a disorientation slowly claims the sanity of the others as each of them succumbs to a mysterious fear."

Rotten Tomatoes rates the film at 78%, and IMDb has it at 6.5.  If you like the genre and like me missed it, "The Last Winter" might be a good film to catch.

Norway - Left Out of Sicko

Posted on Dec 9th, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 09, 2007:

Sicko - The Cut Scene

If I had to leave America I'd want to try living in India for a while before selecting a final resting place, but if I didn't have that option and could live anywhere else in the world it looks like Norway would make a pretty good choice.

Michael Moore actually cut this scene about Norway from Sicko because he thought nobody would believe  him.   I can't confirm or deny, but it sounds like Norway totally rocks.

BEIJING: WE ARE READY

Posted on Dec 10th, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.

December 10th - SFT

Today is International Human Rights Day, a day set-aside to recognize and promote the inherent rights of every individual. In August 2007, China released the theme song of the 2008 Beijing Olympics countdown, a song entitled "Beijing: We are Ready". This Human Rights Day, it is clear that China is not even close to being ready.

There are many good causes, but as the Olympic Games approach we have a unique opportunity to raise awareness about Tibet.  The members of Students for a Free Tibet have proven themselves mindful, boldly courageous, and highly effective in this cause.  Even if you can't contribute financially there are actions you can take today that will make a difference.

Learning to Remember

Live Oak Leaves

This answer may seem a little weird, but for me today's question brings back one of my earliest childhood memories.  It's a point in time that's permanently ingrained in my mind,  and I consider it something spiritual.

Picture me at age 3, 4, or 5.  I really can't remember the exact year, but I'm standing in my back yard and looking up toward the sky at a low hanging limb that extends from an oak tree my parents had allowed to grow only a few years earlier.   As I reach my right hand up to touch the leaf  the concept of memory gels in my mind for the first time and observing what memory is I make a decision to remember touching the leaf forever.

The story sounds a little funny to me, but with only a few possible exceptions I don't think I've stopped remembering since that moment.

Bill Moyers Interviews Keith Olbermann

Posted on Dec 16th, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.

Bill Moyers | PBS

How could I not blog this?  Bill Moyers recently sat down with MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann to discuss his breakout from the rest of the mainstream media with his Special Comments.  It's a wonderful interview for fans of both men, and I imagine we have plenty of those here.

If you'd like to see the entire segment, you can catch it on the PBS website.

Smart Car is Coming to the US in 2008!

Smart Car by Daimler

I'd love to trade my truck in for this, and that alone gives me a sense of this car's marketability.   The Smart Car gets 42 miles per gallon, and has a top speed of 90 mph.   It's expected to run $11,000 to $17,000, and US reservations just started. - Check it out.  :)

Something I Said

Posted on Dec 18th, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.

Just a quick entry on a personal note.   I posted a comment on Digg this morning and checking now I see it's received 382 positive votes with only 16 people digging it down.  That's a new high for me so I thought I'd make a note of it.   The subject at hand combines separation of church and state, Islam, and meditation.

Huckabee's Subliminal Message

Posted on Dec 19th, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.

What Really Matters

Notice anything floating in the background?   You might consider Bill Donahue, president of the Catholic League, to be an unlikely critic, but it turns out he's pretty upset about it.  For  details see Raw Story.

And by the way, remember that theology degree that Huckabee told everyone he had during the Republican debates?   It turns out that's not exactly true.  For details on that story see CBN.

What question did you wake up with this morning?

Posted on Dec 23rd, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 23, 2007:

Apple

I had an Apple dream.   It was rather abstract and parts of it are still fuzzy.  For instance, I'm unaware of the comparison that was being made.   I just remember the white background and the slogan from party on the left.

"turning consciousness on its head"

This morning I'm wondering how I should put that in context.  -  It's weird but fun.
