Bill Moyers: Christian Zionism

Posted on Oct 9th, 2007 by J.K. : Double 3 J.K.

October 5, 2007

If this video doesn't scare your pants off very few will.  This past weekend Bill Moyers took a look at the organization Christians United for Israel (CUFI) led by Pastor John C. Hagee.  In short, it's a swelling call for a preemptive US strike against Iran and the coming of God's glory.   I think you'll find that the video speaks for itself.

On-site at PBS you'll find an explanation of the theology of Christian Zionism including definitions for evangelicalism, fundamentalism, dispensationalism, and rapture.  You can also read a transcript from the show or watch the segment in its entirety.

What did Ghandi say? Something like, “I like your Christ. I don't care for your Christians; they are so unlike your Christ.”

And to quote my man John Lennon…

“God is a concept by which we measure our pain.”

I don't believe in Hagee…

Thanks for the feedback, gang.  One of the things I like about Zaadz is that it's always possible for me to connect with sanity here.   I can't watch something like this without remembering that I live in the heart of the bible belt.

It's so easy to make fun of John Hagee.    I left a comment that rather than focusing on Iran, perhaps he should give himself a sermon on gluttony.  Have you seen the size of this man?  I guess it's easier to say no to hookers than apple pie.  However, the Iran thing is really serious and really scary.   There just isn't anything amusing to say about it.  We just have to stop it.  Once again Bill Moyers did a great job.  I wish more people watched PBS.

i love pbs…*smiles…but j…the reality is that most cannot handle the truth…we like to think we can control what is happening, and the fact is that we cannot…and so, it is much easier to believe the lies…then we don't have to face our helplessness…and our own shadows…we can just go along with the mainstream…and let 'others' deal with it…and…we then do not have to look at ourselves and realize that  to change anything,  we have to get up off our asses…and do something NOW…easier, to go back to sleep instead of taking a stand; which would mean that we have to actually get out of ourselves and do something different…btw…sometimes educating ourselves, and then educating others, is all we can do in the beginning…had you never posted this, then it would not have been known at this point…so thanx for your awareness…

IAPAC (Israeli American Political Action Commitee) has been pushing for a war with Iran for some time now.  They are one of the largest PAC's in DC and wield serious power.  They were behind the Senate passage of the Kyl-Lieberman bill that gave Bush “unstated” permission to attack Iran.  The Democrats who voted for passage are afraid of being soft on terrorism.  Christian Right believer are very supportive of the measure because they hope it will speed up the “Rapture”

excerpt from the bill that passed 76-22

the Lieberman-Kyl amendment, which threatens to “combat, contain and [stop]” Iran via “military instruments.” Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) called the amendment ”Cheney's fondest pipe dream” and said it could “read as a backdoor method of gaining Congressional validation for military action.”

Thanks for the add, Barb.   I've had Lieberman-Kyl on my mind since the vote.  Regardless of what happens, I hope there'll be more publicity about who voted for it, who voted against it, and who sat out  as the 08 election approaches.

And here's another bit of info on Lieberman.  It came up on Huff Post just today.

Lieberman Has No Plans To Investigate Blackwater, Corrupt Iraq Contractors

You are absolutely correct in your assessment of him.  I bet the MA wishes they could recall him and replace him with a real independent

I just wanted to add that the conflict between Christian,Jewish and Islamic extremists (perhaps about 10% of believers out of the 4 billion adherents;yes, still a serious problem) is not the only trend lately that needs serious attention brought to it. Modern day communists states (Russia and China) embracing corporate (not-conscious)capitalism is in my opinion, as serious a threat to liberty and peace as the afore-mentioned. It seems to me that corporate capitalism may have found the perfect partner in these repressive totalitarian regimes. No consumer to protest, no environmental regulations, no organized labor to balance the natural tendency to greed and exploitation. Sounds like a match made in paradise (or not)……
For all Christianity's failings; democracy and liberalism have been able to co-exist with it over the course of the last 500 years. It's true that that relationship is being challenged in America today, but my hope is that reason and logic will align with authentic spiritual insight at the end of the day, and that some kind of healthy reform will prevail, rather than a return to medieval ways……..

Hi J.K.,

I've read about these Fundamentalist whack-jobs but it's horrifying to actually watch – and even more horrifying to see that that monstrous creature actually wields power and currency with your politicians!!  And all in the name of God!

What sane, loving individual believes this filth?  I can't believe that otherwise sane and caring people are actually being affected by this idiocy on a collossal scale.  Do they know they're living in a liberal democracy that embraces all?  How can they say such things, I mean do they even know why America was founded????????

It amazes me how people can twist something as pure and loving as the concept of Jesus to come up with a dialolical agenda!!  These zealots are living in the past, and living on another planet.  Like J.K., I'm glad to read the above posts and see that the majority (I would think the majority) of Americans would presumably prevent these demonic people from enacting their plans of creating Hell on Earth for ALL of us – including our children.
